Definition of Democratic Leader & Leadership

There are different types of leadership in different conditions and circumstances. Democratic leadership is one of them and it is a type of leadership based on power. Other forms of power-based leadership are autocratic leadership, independent leadership, benevolent autocratic leadership, etc.



Leadership that directs tasks after negotiations and making important decisions by subordinates is called democratic leadership.

Democratic leaders give orders to subordinates, ensure that instructions are understood correctly, and accept opportunities to ask and answer questions. This management consults with workers, employees and subordinates to make every decision. Ultimately, the atmosphere remains democratic.

Kuntz and Weihrich agree with the Democratic leadership. "Democratic leaders consult subordinates about proposed actions and decisions and encourage their participation."

JL Massie also quotes: "Democratic leaders not only rely on their own abilities, but also encourage consultation with their subordinates."

Bateman and Zeithaml stated . "Democratic leaders need input from subordinates."
From the above discussion and some definitions of democratic leadership, we find that leadership includes the following concepts:

* Democratic leadership leads after proper discussion with subordinates so that subordinates' opinions are more valuable to leaders.

* Managers collect information from employees.

* Leaders issue orders and explain orders to subordinates.

* If someone wants to learn the reasoning of the democratic leader, the leader indicates the question.

* Such a leader does not fully rely on his own strength and abilities.

* A democratic leader explains to his subordinates and also believes in the illustrations of his subordinates.

Democratic leadership also offers great advantages. Some of the amazing advantages of democratic leadership are mentioned below.

* Under such leadership, employees work based on self-interest. Because they are inspired by the work that needs to be done.

* Such leadership can understand everything. It also increases the quality of work.

* All subordinates are attentive. Because they give their opinion to make decisions. Such employee participation in the decision-making process motivates and inspires smart work.

* Subordinate morale increased and production became more standardized.

* Instructions and controls made easier.

* Waste of time and money is reduced.


There are also some weaknesses of democratic leadership. Some obvious weaknesses of democratic leadership are listed below:

*Work with purpose can be increased.

* Subordinates perceive weaknesses in ensuring that the manager's management function is working properly.

* Another disadvantage of democratic leadership is that it takes a lot of time and money. Because it takes a lot of money and time to argue with everyone.

* The organization may experience a lack of discipline.



Therefore, we can conclude that democratic leadership is a modern leadership system. Although this type of leadership has some limitations, the benefits of democratic leadership outweigh the limitations. Therefore, democratic leadership is considered a good governance process if it can be practiced carefully.
